METHODOLOGY (Comparison: 1979-2000)

Comparison of the Ikonos Imagery with the Old Map

Clipping the Ikonos Image

The two images had to match each other to be able to compare them.  This was done in Idrisi, by using column and row positions to get the clipped, matching images.  The classifications were repeated, and the resulting images were used for the comparison of the old map with the Ikonos image, visually and by area.

Comparison of the Ikonos Image with the Old Map
We calculated the area for each class and created several Boolean maps for every single vegetation class. Those were then compared to the old map. We chose the Isoclust and Minimum Distance to Means classifiers, because the former resembles the Old Map most and the latter resembles it least . To do so the classification results were reclassed, assigning a value of one to the desired class and zero to the rest.
The same procedure was performed for identical classes of the old map. An overlay operation according to the following equation was used for comparison:

          Map showing Change = Ikonos-Boolean – Oldmap-Boolean

The results are maps showing areas with loss of vegetation, no change, and growth of vegetation (see Map Gallery).  Moreover, tables and charts were created, showing the amount of areal change as well as the percentage change for the entire Ikonos Image and for the clipped images.  The interpretation of the results is addressed further in the Analysis section.  Accordingly, the different resolutions were altered to compare them to the old map.
