The Department of Geography at SFU stands in solidarity with Black students, faculty, staff and community members and their allies who call for SFU to take specific actions after the violent arrest of a Black alumnus on December 11, 2020 (letter to Joy Johnson, 13 December 2020). In line with the department’s Black Lives Matter statement, we endorse calls for a comprehensive public inquiry into the event, support for the alumnus, a response to student requests for de-escalation, and the need for SFU to comprehensively address racial profiling and discrimination on campus (letter to Joy Johnson, 13 December 2020). The department would like to express its appreciation to members of the SFU community who are leading the way in calling for these essential actions.
