SFU Volunteer Opportunities:

WINGS is considering putting in an ARX project proposal for someone to make a half-hour radio documentary out of the audio that I and Maria Persdotter recorded at and before the Medicalization of Sex conference.  I'd like to get it done this summer.  Do you think anyone currently in coursework in Gender... studies might be interested in this?

Task: to produce a half-hour radio documentary from audio recorded before and during the Medicalization of Sex conference.  Estimated number of hours: 40. Skills needed:  good auditory memory, selecting and arranging clips to give a broad sense of the conference and its main points, audio editing, scriptwriting/reading.  Some training and assistance available. Output:  28 minute documentary suitable for international audience.

Help young girls learn to embrace physical activity and healthy eating, and develop a positive self-image!

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a group mentoring program that encourages physical activity, balanced eating and the development of a positive self-image, among girls aged 11 to 14.  This program is offered in selected Coquitlam schools.

Who are the volunteer mentors?

Go Girls! mentors are young women, aged 19 to 25, who are enthusiastic, caring and passionate about healthy living. Once they have completed the training, two Go Girls! mentors lead a group of activities and discussions over a two month period.

Who are the participants?

Go Girls! participants, girls ages 11 to 14, are selected by staff at our partnering Coquiltam Middle Schools. The girls may be struggling with low self-esteem, who would not normally participate in activities and who would benefit from mentoring and discussion around physical activity, positive self-esteem and healthy choices.
