Accidental Communities Project

A collaborative project between SFU, St. Paul's Hospital, and the UBC School of Social Work, this project documents the life of one of the most longstanding support groups for HIV positive persons in North America. Utilizing interviews, the project will report findings in two streams: an oral history of the group, to be created with extensive participation by past and current group members, and a conventional evaluation research report on the strengths of the group leader's approach, with attention to the evolving place of the support group in the lives of members and their community.

North Shore Women's Centre

A women's drop-in resource centre located in North Vancouver--on Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Traditional Territories--and serving the whole of the North Shore. The North Shore Women's Centre is a non-profit organization and a registered charity that was founded in 1973.

We are currently looking for women interested in women's issues to be a part of our NSWC Board.   We are hoping that you would be able to distribute our invitation to women you think would like to contribute their dedication, passions and expertise to this 38yr old organization on the North Shore.

If women are interested, we would like to invite then to our next board meeting on July 14th, 2010 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm so they can get a sense of what being a part of our board would entail.  Should they agree to join, we will be voting in new board members at our September Annual General Meeting! In the meantime, we encourage anyone considering our invitation to visit our website www.northshorewomen.ca to get a comprehensive understanding of what we do and why we do it.  It should also be noted that the NSWC Board meets once a month for 2.5 hours in the evening 10 times a year.  Additionally, we require a 1 year committment.

Anyone who is considering this opportunity can contact me at the information listed below.  We look forward to hearing from you and hope you will take the time to consider being a part of our NSWC community!

We Can End All Violence Again Women BC

We Can Logo

'We Can End All Violence against Women' ('We Can' for short) is an international campaign that seeks to end gender-based violence. We are building a broad social movement that challenges and changes the attitudes and beliefs that support and perpetuate violence. The time to act is now!

Violence against women is both a violation of human rights and an impediment to achieving gender equality. Yet in many communities across British Columbia, just as in the rest of Canada and the world, violence against women is accepted as ‘normal behaviour’.

It is only by challenging these perceptions of ‘normalcy’ that we can bring change about. We believe that changing beliefs and attitudes surrounding violence against women will change behaviour, and make our communtiies safer for everyone.

Come join us for a We Can BC volunteer orientation happening Thursday, July 22nd at SFU Surrey, 6 to 7.30 pm steps away from the sky-train station! RSVP to tess.gregory@justiceeducation.ca
