HOW TO APPLY:

A. Online Application

  • Apply online using the online application system.
    • In order to use the online application system, you will need to pay an application fee of $90 CAN (students with Canadian transcripts) or $125 CAN (students with international transcripts) by credit card (MasterCard or Visa)
    • If you are unable to pay the application fee by credit card, see How to Pay Your Fees for alternative payment methods.
    • If you are applying as a non-degree or exchange student, or would like to reinstate your previous program of study, please contact the department.

    B.  Submit Supporting Documents

    The application package should include:
    1. Letters of reference from three people who are familiar with you and qualify to evaluate your capacity for graduate academic work. Please note that we do not provide reference forms, so the letters of reference must include full contact information for the referees.

    2. Official transcripts in sealed envelopes should be sent from the applicable institutions (one from each post-secondary institution you have attended) directly to the Humanities Department. Please note that transcripts submitted directly by the applicant, regardless of whether they bear the institution's official seal, may be disqualified from consideration by the Graduate Program Committee.

    3. A two-page statement of your proposed area of study. This should include a proposed topic, and a description of the approach you wish to take, including main theme or period.

    4. A short curriculum vitae showing relevant course work, employment and volunteer work.

    5. A sample of your scholarly work, such as an upper-level (third or fourth year) essay, an essay prepared especially for this application, a substantive portion of your honours thesis (if applicable), or samples of any academic publications.

    6. If your first language is not English then an original TOEFL certificate or IELTS is required

    7. Submit a Graduate Fellowship Application if you meet the eligibility criteria. The deadline to submit a Graduate Fellowship application to the department is April 15.

All parts of the application must be sent directly to the following address:

    Graduate Program
    Department of Humanities
    Simon Fraser University
    8888 University Drive
    Burnaby, B.C. V5A 1S6

Applications are not complete until and unless the department receives all parts of the package.

    ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

SFU has a very limited number of major entrance scholarships for exceptional students, valued at $18,000 for a one-year period. If you wish to be nominated for an entrance scholarship, you are strongly encouraged to submit your application for admission to your department of intended enrolment by January 15. Failure to submit your application for admission by this deadline will decrease your chances for consideration in the annual Entrance Scholarship Competition to be held in February.
