The number Humanities faculty actually teaching a full load this academic year is quite low: David Mirhady is bought out of his teaching by CUFA/BC (although he is running the distance courses in Latin and Classical Mythology); Ian Angus has one less course this term because of his being interim Director of the Institute for the Humanities and he will be entirely bought out from teaching through his Shadboldt Fellowship in 2012; Emily O’Brien is on parental leave; Samir Gandesha is on study leave; and Christine Jones is on leave to take on the role of President of Redeemer Pacific College. Paul Dutton has a decreased teaching load as Farley Chair; Paul Crowe has a decreased load to run the David Lam Centre; and Ellie Stebner a decreased load for her outreach activities as Woodsworth Chair. Steve Duguid is now a joint appointment with Graduate Liberal Studies and has a decreased teaching load as its Director. That leaves only Shuyu Kong and Annie-Marie Feenberg actually teaching a full load of courses this year, and even Anne-Marie will again do half of her teaching through the Prague Field School. Yoshi Kawasaki of course continues to teach in and direct the Asia-Canada program. Brook Pearson has also been teaching a very full load of courses as a limited-term lecturer.
As well as teaching full-time, Shuyu Kong has also taken on the role of Graduate Studies Director and university senator.
We are also blessed with a great team of sessional instructors, including Wayne Knights , Gordan Djurgevic, Antone Minard, Alessandra Caperdoni, Niall MacKenzie, and Michael Newton , as well as Chris Morrissey , Rob Ho , and Brian Pendleton.
Our new M.A. program enters its second year. Our continuing students are Gordon Gray, Meg Penner, Huyen Pham, Daniel Gladstone, Matt Hogan , and Devon Field . Our new students are Elliot Sorban , Cameron Duncan , and Yang Tang , who comes to us all the way from China.
With Jason Sunder taking on a part-time position and responsibility for the Asia-Canada program, we now have a more settled complement of staff, led by our Manager Alice Hartley with Seychelle Cushing as our Chair’s Secretary.
Last year we joined forces with the Language Training Institute, so we now enjoy a similar relationship with several new colleagues to what we have had with the Asia-Canada program and (though less so) with Graduate Liberal Studies. That is, Alice Hartley is the Manager for Humanities, Asia-Canada, and the Language Training Institute, but otherwise the programs have their own autonomy.
Billie Ng is the Director of the Language Training Institute. Both she and Jia Fei teach Mandarin. Mónica Escudero and Lilian Zuccolo teach Spanish, Naoko Takei and Noriko Omae teach Japanese, and Claudia Hein teaches German together with Trude Heift and Suzanne Hilgendorf , who are jointly appointed with Linguistics. Keren Campbell is our new assistant in the LTI.
