James Burke's KnowledgeWeb
The
KnowledgeWeb system is designed to present knowledge in a highly interconnected,
holistic way that allows for an infinite number of paths of exploration
between people, places, things, and events.
Could
we do a prototype of an advanced UI for the knowledge web project?

Dear Steve: We met when you came to Seattle last week and did that boffo
demostration for us and the Kweb teacher workshop Pat McKercher organized.
I just wanted to say how much I was impressed by your work and hope
very much that we can find ways to incorporate some of what you showed
in the Kweb. Our main problem at the moment is the interface and I have
what I thought were pie-in-sky ideas for it, until I saw what you can
do (which blew me away). So I very much hope things work out! Thanks
again for coming to show us.
Best regards, James Burke
From K-web news letter:
Seattle meetings: Thursday afternoon, Steve DiPaola of Simon Fraser
University in British Columbia gave a demonstration his amazing 3D avatars
and Muse 3D software, which could add very compelling visuals to the
Knowledge Web interface.

UI DOC
UI_Analysis
: Steve, We'd be very excited to have your students work on the Knowledge
Web, as up till now we have been concentrating on the backend/database
(burkeweb.org).
If students have not seen the Connections series, it's streamed at:
http://www.netcast.usf.edu/Public/announce/Education/science_tech_societ
y.htm
The best quick overview on functionality (though it is not what we want
in terms of look and feel) is the video: http://www.cyburkespace.net/demo/video/kweb.rm
(user: demo password: video). I'll attach James' blueprint for
the GUI. I have just pinged to see if we can get a demo of the 3d browser,
if not the code.
We've been avoiding press after getting swamped w. volunteers after
the Wired art'l, but James is doing TechNation on npr when he's here
in March (maybe we'll ask for money instead ;), but as we get closer
to launch we'll be less shy.
I can imagine a couple of interrelated projects:
1) GUI: 3D version could be mockup or prototype, depending on skillset
of students and how fast we can get the code.
2D: this would involve designing ( maybe in Flash ) control devices
for input, and perhaps display (or maybe the console could be a skin
that overlays TheBrain as output). An example of a time bar i like:
http://www.archpark.org.il/index.asp.
other major components/devices are the map/globe, list of last 6 places
visited (myjourney) . Some of the controls might also be 21/2 D, eg
the globe. The nested spheres are also crucial (I'll also attach some
design notes on that=UI_analysis).
2) Help Avatar: Bonnie's friends at Haptek did a sort of rough draft
of 3D avatar, but the project could emphasize either the look of Av
itself or functionality, but the goal of both would be the same: to
get more of James' personality and humor into the Kweb. (the Av could
also be bluescreen video). He would serve as guide and goad as a user
takes a journey (we had thought that we'd make one "predesignated journey"
on the KWeb would be a tutorial on how to use the interface, with the
Av offering help on that).
3) Immersive Historical recreation/simulation: ideally the user would
be involved in a breakthrough by helping a famous person solve a problem
(eg Watt did not so much invent the steam engine so much as repair one
in such a way as they became practical). The historical person could
be played by a person in avatar or a bot. The key would be interactivity;
game design might be useful here (scavenger hunts for objects or information,
for example). For manipulation of objects, Atmos is clearly better.
If students have less programming and modelling skills, Activeworlds
in Eduverse has public domain historical architectural elements, historical
avatars, and bots that are extremely easy to use.
4) Burke Institute: essentially this would be (in its simplest terms)
a 3D web page to orient the public about the Kweb, w/ some interactivity
so they could be involved. More ambitiously, it would serve as a collaborative
workspace for the internationally dispersed virtual team, perhaps enhanced
by Zope based tools (conference room, auditiorium, library, cafe etc).
The basic design task would be to create a space that enables community
and cooperation.
We could have a live event to showcase work at the end of qtr?
when is end of qtr?
thx! pm
3. Bruce Damer
and Atmosphere Projects
Bruce
wrote the "Avatars" book, is the "guru" of several
worlds ( onlive, active worlds, atmospheres, ...) and runs the Avatars
conferences. We could work with him and his companies and organization
on several possible ideas. He is very connected to many projects. He
also runs the community side of Adobe Atmospheres with his Atmospherians
site. He has data come in from the Mars Rover and we can use it to do
a project.
