Precedent Studies

2x History of Architecture

You will need these when you begin designing your spaces, buildings, digital environments. I EXPECT that when you do to be referencing OUSTANDING form, not something you make up in your head. Your precedents will provide openings as you begin your design brainstorming and will provide containers for your interaction design.

These two (architecture and interaction design) must be SEAMLESS in your 3 projects and particularly your final programmed working prototype. The whole concept of the course is that the architecture and the interaction design need to be designed and implemented together or we get incongruity (eg: Prada New York)

Most of these precedents can be foiund on websites like greatbuildingsonline.com . If you have any difficulty at all you shouldnlt, UBC Fine Arts Library or UBC School of Architecture Reading Room will have the EXTENSIVE resources. These are common topics. Really take note of the kinds of form produced and think about HOW you will reproduce such forms in your designs (we’ll provide some software demos). Some of these are architecture AND furniture design (A+F).

What does this mean? Anything? What period or “style” is this”? I give the BASE expectations below. You can do more.

1. Frank Lloyd Wright: he has 3 distinct phases (1890’s, 1930’s + 1950’s). Robie House, Larkin Bldg., Falling Water, and Guggenheim must be covered.
