"For my PhD coursework, I took graduate level courses in health science, computer science, and mathematics.  I am neither a mathematician nor a biologist, but in the course of a day I am generally having to understand and apply both biology and mathematics. [...] Ideally, if we have full understanding of a mathematical model, we can use it to inform our policies, but to be honest, I just really like learning what mathematics Nature has chosen to solve problems.  Life is incompatible with failing to obey mathematics."
