Teaching Assistant and Tutor Marker Survey on Academic Integrity at SFU

Teaching assistants and tutor markers offer observations regarding the methods of cheating and suggest safeguards that can be implemented to counteract academic dishonesty. They also raise concerns about insufficient resources including the hours available for TAs to help monitor large-class exams. They perceive a lack of consistent enforcement of policies even within departments and believe some faculty should to take a more active role in explaining and enforcing academic honesty policies. They also suggest 1) establishing a university-wide writing center to aid students, 2) increased communication to improve students’ understanding of academic honesty and to foster a consistent culture of academic honesty throughout the University, and 3) recording first offences in a university-wide database to ensure that repeat offenders are treated as such.
