Strengthening Higher Education Stakeholder Relations in Kenya (2011–2012)

Description

This partnership project was designed to support University of Nairobi (UoN) in developing a coordinated institutional strategy for strengthening external relations, with a particular focus on developing and linking UoN’s knowledge and innovation with industry stakeholders in ways that support Kenya’s development plan.

Results

SFU contributed its experience in strategic planning, innovation and industry relations, and international development partnerships, in order to support UoN’s efforts to:

  • Enhance UoN’s institutional strategy and framework for improved external linkages and stimulate innovation and partnerships with industry;
  • Enhance capacity to conduct consultancies; and
  • Develop strategies to support UoN efforts to further the implementation of Vision 2030 (Kenya’s poverty reduction plan)

SFU Project Team

Dr. Michael Stevenson, President Emeritus, former President and Vice-Chancellor from 2000 to August 2010, was the lead for the strategic planning portion of the project.

Mr. Michael C. Volker, Director of the SFU’s University/Industry Liaison Office (UILO) and an entrepreneur active in the development of new high technology ventures, was the lead for the University industry liaison portion of the project.

Ms. Shaheen Nanji, Director of the International Development office who was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, managed the project.

UoN Project Team

Dr. Kamau Gachigi, Chairman and Coordinator, S&T Park Steering Committee, was the lead in executing the activities under this partnership, particularly as they relate to University-Industry liaison.

Prof. Peter M.F. Mbithi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance), strategic planning for the UoN, was the senior management representative for the project, particularly as it related to institutional planning.
