Information for SFU Researchers

Services Offered by the IO

Identifying and Assessing University Technologies

By visiting researchers or via a disclosure from a faculty member or student, technologies which may have commercial potential are identified. The IO assists in identifying applications for University technologies and assessing the market. Download the Disclosure Form.

Providing Intellectual Property Advice And Protection

IO staff conduct searches of patent databases and provide advice to researchers on whether intellectual property protection is possible. Each year, the IO finances a small number of patent applications for promising technologies.

Funding Prototype Development

The IO provides funding to develop or test proof-of-concept inventions or scale-up bench research which may have commercial potential.

Identifying Industrial Partners to Commercialize University Technologies

Suitable industrial organizations are identified and contacted. IO staff assist in determining the value of a University technology and negotiating commercialization agreements.

Assisting With The Creation Of New Ventures

The IO will help a researcher determine the feasibility of establishing a new venture based on a University technology. IO staff provide general business advice, may help in finding the resources to prepare a business plan, and recommend potential financing options. Office space for new ventures is available in the Business Development Centre located at SFU's Discovery Park and in TIME Ventures at SFU-Vancouver. TIME Ventures also offers many other programs to assist entrepreneurs, including training, mentoring, and investor forums.

SFU's Entrepreneurs-in-Residence may also be introduced to potential new spin-offs. These experienced company founders and investors provide valuable feedback on business plans, and in some cases take an active interest in helping form a new company.

Partnering Researchers with Industry & Government for Collaborative Research And Development

A primary activity of IO staff is partnering or matching researchers with companies and government organizations to conduct collaborative research. IO staff respond to industry requests for research assistance and visit companies to determine their research needs and make them aware of the expertise of SFU faculty, students, and staff.

Informational materials describing applied research activities at SFU are developed and distributed and SFU research capabilities are listed in appropriate industry directories. The IO cooperates with SFU Faculties to organize and implement research consortia and institutes that have industry interaction as an important objective.
