Prototype Development/Proof of Principle Funding

The IO provides limited funding on a competitive basis to develop or test proof-of-concept inventions or to scale up bench research which may have commercial potential. All current SFU faculty, staff and students are eligible for support. Project proposals must relate directly to knowledge or technology developed at SFU, and the underlying research should be at an advanced stage, with a clearly identified path to commercialization.

The IO will work with the project principals in commercializing the technology. Typically, this involves assignment of the technology to SFU and agreement to share a portion of subsequent revenue with SFU when commercialization is successful. Commercialization of the technology may occur through new company creation or by license to an existing company.

A Creator who elects to Commercialize his/her IP must disclose such election in writing, as described in Appendix B, Commercialization Procedures.
