Spin-Out Companies
SFU defines a spin-out company as follows:
A company founded to commercialize intellectual property which has been assigned to the University by an SFU researcher and subsequently licensed to the company by SFU in exchange for an equity interest in the company and/or a share of royalties; or
A company in which an SFU faculty member is a principal, the formation of which was dependent on technology developed at SFU, and to which services and/or funding for technology development have been provided by the IO or SF Univentures; or
A company previously in existence but significantly reconstituted around technology licensed from SFU.
Companies included in the list of SFU spin-outs do not include sole proprietorships, faculty consulting companies, or companies formed by SFU alumni unless they are based on technology developed at SFU.
Levels
Level 1: Founded to commercialize SFU technology or significantly reconstituted around technology licensed from SFU, with IO involvement in commercialization.
Level 2: Founded to commercialize technology developed at SFU.
Level 3: Company principals and/or the IO deem the level and nature of collaboration to be significant.
An asterisk * indicates that SFU holds equity in the company.
