Ruby Remote aims to provide simple media controls for televisions, specifically aimed at seniors and those with cognitive impairments. Those with hearing, vision, or cognitive impairments do not have many sources of entertainment, and without a practical way to control the television it can lead to frustration and boredom.

Current solutions for remotes aimed at seniors are expensive, hard to program, do not allow menus or alerts to be closed, and have buttons that are too small for many users. Our solution will have large, bright buttons that are easy to use and read, and will remove the more advanced functions that may be confusing and difficult for seniors to use. Although the remote will likely need to be set up by a caretaker or loved one, it will be customizable and tailored to the users’ needs.

Our initial target market will be the roughly 250,000 Canadians with dementia who do not live in long term care homes. They have one of the hardest times operating a TV remote, and we want to help make their TV experience more comfortable and stress-free.
