Professor Hirofumi Kato of the University of Hokkaido's Centre for Ainu Studies and members of the Ainu community once again requested IPinCH participation in an international symposium on Hokkaido, Japan. The symposium was held in the Akan region, home to the Akan Ainu community, and to the natural beauty of Akan National Park.

Working Group Co-chair, Steering Committee and Advisors Meeting, Simon Fraser University

On January 9-11, 2009, the IPinCH Working Group Co-Chairs, Steering Committee and Advisors convened at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC, Canada to kick off our exciting, seven-year, international research project. David Schaepe, archaeologist and co-manager of Stó:lo Research and Resource Management Centre (a partnering organization based in Chilliwack, BC) opened the 3-day meeting with a fascinating introduction to the Stó:lo Nation’s work in resource and heritage management on their traditional territory. Dave’s presentation affirmed the relevance and timeliness of the IPinCH Project to the Stó:lo Nation and grounded many of the concepts participants discussed during our meeting. More »

IPinCH Steering Committee member, Julie Hollowell (DePauw University), participated in the session 'Resisting Enclosure: Emergent Dialogues in Archaeological Ethnography' with her presentation ‘Ethnography of Archaeologies’, which covered the use of ethnography in IPinCH-funded case studies, among other topics. In the same session, IPinCH team member Lena Mortensen (University of Toronto - Scarborough) presented ‘Value, Authority, and Heritage: Ethnographic Approaches to Copán Archaeology’ and team member Lynn Meskell (Stanford University) was a discussant. The other discussant was Paul Eiss (Carnegie Mellon University).More »
