George Smith Receives Honorary Doctor of Letters

George Smith, an IPinCH Associate, has recently received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, for his 30 years of dedication to cultural heritage management and public archaeology. 

Recognized as a "pioneer and leader in contemporary archaeology," George has been praised for bringing cultural sensitivity to his practice, "taking it beyond pure academics and technical skills to encompass aspects such as the application of law and ethics, interaction with the public, and collaborations with Native peoples." In 2000 George received an honorary degree from the University of South Florida, and in 2007, was the recipient of the Society for American Archaeology Excellence in Cultural Resource Management Award.  Congratulations George!
