Traditional knowledge (TK) is broadly defined as the collective body of knowledge, experiences, traditions, and values held by societies that explain, record, and perpetuate their relationship with the world. The compatibility of TK with Western knowledge is hotly debated. An upcoming international conference, Itàà kati Traditional Knowledge Festival in Yellowknife, NWT, will explore the many dimensions of TK from a variety of perspectives.

The multi-event symposium, to be held September 20-21, will include a one-day TEDx Yellowknife event, and a series of lectures the next day. Keynote speakers include IPinCH Director George Nicholas, ethnobotanist Wade Davis, anthropologists Tim Ingold and Paul Nadasdy, psychologist Suzanne Stuart, and anti-racism educator George Dei —all of whom will share their insights into the meaning and uses of traditional Indigenous knowledge from various perspectives. There is also a pre-conference graduate student session.

The event is hosted by the Tlicho Government, in partnership with the Canadian Polar Commission and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, an IPinCH Partner Organization.
