The Intellectual Property Issues in Cultural Heritage (IPinCH) project is an international research initiative involving collaboration among scholars and a diverse range of partners, including Aboriginal communities, government agencies, and professionals from a variety of fields.
IPinCH seeks to advance understanding of intellectual property issues related to cultural heritage in a wide range of settings and to support the development of appropriate policies and practices for those working in this area. Based at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, the project is funded by the Major Collaborative Research Initiative (MCRI) of Canada’s Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). A key objective of the IPinCH project is to support student work in areas related to intellectual property in cultural heritage. To this end, the project awards fellowships to eligible Canadian graduate students who demonstrate a commitment to study and research in this field. Fellowships are awarded for a one-year period at the rate of $15,000 per annum for PhD students and $10,000 per annum for MA students. Fellowships at the PhD level may be extended to a second year, pending performance review and funding availability. Funding for this competition is available beginning January 1, 2013.
- To be eligible to receive an IPinCH Graduate Student Fellowship, you must be a Canadian graduate student (MA or PhD) registered full-time at a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or abroad and undertaking a program of studies and research that dovetails with the objectives and themes of the IPinCH project.
- Preference will be given to students who are in the advanced stages of their program (i.e., second year or later) and who can demonstrate the support of an existing IPinCH team member (e.g., as a Faculty supervisor or mentor).
- Students holding a SSHRC fellowship may not also hold an IPinCH graduate student fellowship.
To apply, submit a proposal (max. 2000 words) providing the following information:
- Personal and institutional information: provide applicant’s full name, contact information, and citizenship status, as well as name of applicant’s post-secondary institution, department and/or program of study, faculty supervisor, and current scholarly funding sources (if any).
- Study program and objectives: describe the status of your graduate studies (e.g., year of study, accomplishments to date) and your research objectives, including plans for fieldwork, research methods employed, scholarly writing and presentations, and expected graduation date.
- Relationship to IPinCH objectives and themes: describe how your work relates to the themes and objectives of the IPinCH project, including how it might contribute to existing IPinCH initiatives (e.g., case studies and working groups). Highlight your existing links (if any) to IPinCH activities and team members, and, if possible, identify an existing IPinCH team member who may be willing to support or supervise your involvement in IPinCH activities.
