The big difference between the Italian architecture and American is the existence of the piazza and public space. We have a lot of this space, and we are losing that space, because globalization [has brought] to Italy lots of this space, like shopping malls and big parking [lots], a place where you go to do something else, and you meet people, but the interior of the building is the new public space. What we try to do is try to transform this. This [competition submission] is a shopping mall. What's important about the shopping mall is [it's] the new medium of the city. It's the new place where you can meet people, you go there because you don't want to go in the piazza anymore, or you don't want to go in this public, traditional space, so the new activity makes a colonization of the traditional space.
