Office of the CIO

The Chief Information Officer has overall responsibility for information technology services and strategy.  He or she reports jointly to the Vice-President, Finance and Administration and to the Vice President, Academic, and also acts as a key point of contact and interaction with others about the portfolio.

Reporting to the CIO, the central IT Services department provides a wide range of institutional services.

  • The data communications network and telephone system, including network security
  • The primary SFU data centres and computing infrastructure such as servers, storage, and backup
  • Institutional services such as computer account management, e-mail, calendaring, web and file space for students/faculty/staff, and student computing labs
  • Technology for learning and collaboration, such as the Canvas, Blackboard (WebCT) and Sakai e-learning systems, wiki and blog services, web survey tool, web content management system
  • Administrative systems for most of SFU's administrative needs
  • Research support, including high-performance computing
  • General client support, including end-user device support in some administrative units

The CIO also has a mandate to work collaboratively in the development of SFU policies, procedures, and standards, and to provide leadership in the effective use of information technology.
