New Internal Speech Directory

April 12, 2012

The Network Services team of IT Services put the finishing touches on a new internal speech directory, ASKME. “What’s an internal speech directory?” you ask.

It’s an automated directory assistance system that uses voice recognition software to transfer calls. Simply dial ASKME (27563) from any phone on campus, clearly speak the name of the person or department you wish to contact, and ASKME will automatically route your call. For individuals off campus, dial 778.782.7563 to connect.

Given our global community, the directory has been programmed to interpret cultural accents and to recognize name variations. For example, it will identify William Smith and Bill Smith as the same individual.

We want to stress that ASKME will not replace the existing online directory, or the SFU Switchboard Operator. Our SFU Operator provides a valuable service assisting and directing callers to appropriate individuals.

Enjoy the new service. User-friendly instructions are incorporated in the directory software but, should you experience problems, please email, phones@sfu.ca.
