The BCBC is a group of scientists, social scientists, and social activists dealing with issues in biotechnology and genetic engineering in a wide range of disciplines, which has been working together since 1995. The group meets over a pot-luck supper every three weeks, to share information and resources, strategize, plan public education initiatives, collaborate on statements on issues in biotechnology, and give one another moral support. BCBC is also the base of an electronic listserve reaching a wider circle of concerned individuals. Content ranges from meeting notices to news items to discussion of each other's work. BCBC has been adopted as the biotechnology working group for FarmFolk/CityFolk, who are listed below.

Genetic Resources Action International (GRAIN) is an international non-governmental established in 1990, to help further a global movement of popular action against genetic erosion. GRAIN is registered in Spain as an international, non-profit foundation. It has offices in Barcelona and in Los Baos, the Philippines. A wholly autonomous organisation, GRAIN is financed by grants from NGOs, governments and intergovernmental organisations. Their work focuses on five issue areas: agriculture, arms control, energy, global resources, and transportation. UCS was born in 1969 out of a movement at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where a group of faculty and students joined together to protest the misuse of science and technology. Women's Health in Women's Hands is a participatory centre for women of diverse backgrounds and needs. They work towards enhancing a sense of well being and health by placing women's health into women's hands. The group is a pro-choice, anti-racist and multilingual centre. Issues that they address include access to adequate housing, employment, nutrition, freedom of movement and freedom from all forms of discrimination. The health centre provides networking with other agencies, education and training workshops, education and advocacy on female genital mutilation, mental health promotion, self- support groups and advocacy support.

Women's Health Interaction is a network of women from across Canada who are concerned about women and health. WHI reaches out to women as consumers, health workers, community and international development workers and health activists. It provides a forum for women to speak out on health concerns. WHI co-operates on an international level with Health Action International which advocates the adoption of a code of conduct on pharmaceutical marketing practices. The current focus for WHI includes women and pharmaceuticals and population control, family planning and reproductive technology. They also publish a number of resources.

WFDAC is an association of organisations, groups and individuals that promotes education and action to build food security, both locally and globally. A small National Secretariat co-ordinates the world of volunteer-run Local Steering Committees in communities across Canada. Though initially formed to promote activities in Canada for World Food Day (October 16 each year), WFDAC is now active year round. Their work includes the production and distribution of educational resources on food and hunger issues; public awareness activities; and a community-based Food Security Watch program. The WFDAC programme is financially supported by CIDA, Health Canada, Agriculture Canada, members' fees andnations. They publish World Food Update which is distributed free of charge in all regions of Canada through the national network of WFDAC.
