The SFU Locomotion Lab welcomes undergraduate, masters, doctoral and postdoctoral trainees from a wide range of backgrounds including kinesiology, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physiology, zoology, neuroscience, computer science and physics.
What’s research like in the Locomotion Lab? Well, things are pretty exciting. Among other things, some of us are making cool devices to capture energy from the body, some are studying reflexes in exotic animals like elephants, and others are helping people who have suffered from stroke walk better. People come from different backgrounds and are working on a diverse range of projects. But, we share a common interest in locomotion physiology and so we always have a lot to talk about. (Be sure to check out the In the News page to read, listen and watch some of the coverage of the Locomotion Lab’s research).
Currently, there are two possible streams for pursuing graduate degrees in the Locomotion Laboratory. The first is through Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology. The second stream is through Engineering Science.
SFU is a young and vibrant campus. It is often referred to as “the radical campus” or “the Berkeley of the North”. It is always ranked within the top few comprehensive universities in Canada and prides itself on being the best research-focused comprehensive university in the nation. Its sits on top of a mountain, surrounded by protected park land and overlooking the Burrard Inlet. Ski hills, beaches, and downtown Vancouver are all very close by. On the weekend, it is sometimes tough figuring out whether you want to go skiing, sailing, sea kayaking, white water kayaking, rock climbing, ice climbing, swimming or to see a band.
