If you are interesting in taking Spanish and you are enrolling in a Spanish course for the first time, please take the Spanish Placement Test.
Where: Language Learning Centre (Robert C. Brown Hall 7403)
Time: Anytime the Language Learning Centre is open
The computerized placement test takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. After the results are evaluated by a Spanish instructor, the instructor will recommend a course suitable for the student. The department will then give the student permission to enroll in the recommended course.

This course is the first half of first year Spanish. The emphasis is on developing conversation and comprehension skills as well as understanding how Spanish grammar works. You will learn numbers, typical daily vocabulary, and be introduced to cultural aspects of the Spanish language. You should expect to spend roughly 6–8 hours per week in class preparation and language lab activities.
By the end of the semester, you will have acquired basic conversational skills and an elementary reading facility.
PREREQUISITES:
None. Note that students with secondary school Spanish 12 will not normally be permitted to take SPAN 102 for credit.
This course is the second half of first year Spanish. As in SPAN 102, the emphais is on oral skills and grammar while continuing to develop reading and writing proficiency. By the end of the semester you will be able to communicate in Spanish using a wide range of grammatical structures and vocabulary. SPAN 103 should be taken in the semester immediately following SPAN 102.

SPAN 102 or equivalent.
This course is the first half of second-year Spanish studies. You’ll transfer your knowledge of the structure of Spanish into performance and use the language in an accurate and idiomatic way. The emphasis here is on further development of all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By the end of SPAN 201, students will be able to function in a Spanish-speaking environment.
PREREQUISITES:
SPAN 103 or equivalent
This is the second half of second year Spanish. There is an emphasis on comprehension and content analysis of written materials, e.g., short stories. More writing assignments are required in SPAN 202 than in lower level Spanish courses and particular attention will be paid to the accurate use of grammar and orthography. By the end of this course, students will have the necessary skills to attend content courses taught in Spanish.

SPAN 201 or equivalent
This course supports other SPAN courses by helping learners expand their Spanish vocabulary across different geographical and social contexts, both orally and in writing.
PREREQUISITES:
SPAN 201 or equivalent. This course can be taken concurrently with SPAN 202.
This course has been designed for students that already have strong oral communication skills but need a more complete and through review of Spanish grammar. It is intended for advanced Spanish language students or native speakers of Spanish who want to improve their knowledge of Spanish lexical variations, as well as learn about some of the differences between Spanish and English grammar.

The purpose of this course is to enhance conversational skills by introducing students to Latin American culture and society through the cinema. By the end of the course students will have been exposed to iflms from Latin America and Spain; and they will have improved their aural and oral skills in Spanish by participating in weekly class discussions.

This is the first half of third year Spanish. The emphasis is on further development of conversational skills and writing strategies. SPAN 303 introduces complex grammar structures and semantic nuances of the language.

This course will further develop your aural comprehension and conversational skills through in-class discussions, oral presentations, movies, and interviews with Spanish speakers. You will build vocabulary and improve grammar and writing skills through reading, writing, and translation exercises. Course materials include short stories, novel excerpts, poetry, guest readings, and lectures by Latin American writers. By the end of the course you will be able to produce a variety of texts and carry out interviews and discussions on demanding topics.

SPAN 303 or equivalent
This course is intended for students and professionals with a solid Spanish grammar foundation who are ready to study language in the context of commerce. SPAN 305 stresses the specialized vocabulary necessary to function in the Spanish-American business world. You will also learn important cultural aspects of business language use.
SPAN 305 surveys a broad array of commercial topics including banking, real estate, wholesale and retail trade, stock markets, and business travel. The required text is supplemented by authentic readings.
PREREQUISITES:
SPAN 202
This course introduces students to Spanish-to-English translation. This is a hands-on course requiring weekly assignments based on a variety of sources: literature, scientific press, popular media, etc. By the end of the course, students will be able to produce high quality Spanish-to-English translations from a range of genres.
