FALL 2022 UPDATE FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT, PEOPLE, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

Inspired by the start of a new academic year, Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, vice-president, people, equity and inclusion, shares updates on the ongoing work to develop an Equity Compass at SFU, leadership in Faculty Relations and hirings within the Equity Office.

 

PROTECTING INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES' TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE

Inspired early in his career while teaching in Kamloops, SFU Archaeology professor George Nicholas shares his journey working with, and for, Indigenous communities to help protect their heritage.

 

GOING GREY IN THE WORKPLACE

Does having grey hair affect your employment opportunities? Professor emerita Gloria Gutman, of SFU’s Gerontology Research Centre, discusses aging and ageism in our society and workplaces with Stephen Quinn on CBC’s The Early Edition. 

 

EMBEDDING CLIMATE ACTION INTO EVERYTHING WE DO

ACT – Action on Climate Team at SFU works with organizations to embed low carbon resilience approaches and nature-based solutions into their planning and operations. Executive director Alison Shaw shares their innovative work to place climate action into everything we do.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: HONORARY DEGREES 2023

The Senate Committee on University Honours invites members of the community to nominate deserving people for an honorary degree. The highest honour conferred by the university, honorary degrees are awarded to distinguished individuals in recognition of their achievements or for their exceptional contributions to the public good. Deadline to submit is September 21, 2022.

 

CELEBRATE AN OUTSTANDING INSTRUCTOR

Faculty, staff and students are invited to nominate outstanding instructors for the Awards for Excellence in Teaching, which have been expanded this year to include three new specialized awards. Deadline to submit is October 17, 2022.

 

The annual SFU United Way Book Sale at the Burnaby campus returns October 12 - 13, 2022. The book sale supports SFU's fundraising campaign for the Lower Mainland's various program offerings and services to individuals in our communities.

Please submit your newsletter items for our next edition by 12 p.m. Friday, September 16. Reminder: all SFU campus offices will be closed Monday, September 19.

ABOLITION FEMINISM: DREAMING A NEW REALITY

Hear from renowned scholars/activists Angela Davis and Gina Dent as they share from their groundbreaking recent book, Abolition. Feminism. Now. and reflect on the urgent necessity of abolition as a practice and a step toward new social realities. This keynote is brought to you by The Circle Project and produced in partnership with SFU Galleries.

 

SFU FOOTBALL SEASON KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND

September 17 | Hosted by SFU Athletics

Come and cheer the SFU Red Leafs Football team at their first home game of the season this Saturday at SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field when they host Central Washington at 1 p.m. 

The pregame tailgate will feature food from Mr. Tube Steak, tacos and desserts beginning at 12 noon and a musical performance by Hickelstock featuring first-year students Luka Feigelstock & Brooke Conley.

You can pick up a free rally towel when entering SFU Stadium. Also, parking for all SFU varsity events is offered free in the West Parkade, adjacent to the West Gym.

 

YOU'RE INVITED: COMMUNITY SAFETY FORUM

September 20 | Hosted by SFU's Vancouver Campus

Attend the next event in SFU Vancouver's series of community forums to discuss keeping the Vancouver campus and neighbourhood safe, accessible and welcoming. Representatives from Campus Public Safety and other groups will be there to answer questions and discuss safety measures. No registration is required.

 

September 21 | Hosted by SFU's Knowledge Mobilization Hub

Strong knowledge mobilization plans are key in successful grant proposals. In this workshop, participants will work on developing a plan for grant proposals, partnership meetings or to initiate their mobilizing activities.
