$2 MILLION GIFT HELPS SEED NEW IDEAS IN THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE

Claire and William Cupples's generous commitment will support the creation of the Life Science Innovation Fund, which will provide an annual award to help researchers initiate proof-of-concept research projects. They hope their gift helps make SFU researchers more competitive and enables them to secure larger grants.

 

PATHWAYS TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE

Aina Rabesoa has experienced first-hand the transformative impact of philanthropy. She joined the first cohort of SFU Uggla Family Scholars in September 2021 and is currently in her second year of studying computer science.

 

PODCAST CREATED BY FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES ALUMNUS

Christine Henderson and professor Scott Lear co-launched How to Health, a new, conversation-style healthy living podcast that draws from population health and human biology, as well as lived experience. They aim to provide listeners with evidence-based lifestyle medicine and add more science-informed opinions into the conversations.

 

SFU Global Humanities Department Chair David Mirhady was elected President of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric (ISHR) at its biennial meeting in Nijmegen (Netherlands) in August. Mirhady's 2-year appointment means the next international ISHR conference will take place in Vancouver, where experts will examine the entire history of rhetoric.

SFU ATHLETIC RECAP

Congratulations to our varsity sports teams for this victorious weekend.

Basketball - The men’s team defeated Cal St. Dom. Hills on Friday and ended the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) challenge with a victory against Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday. On Friday, the women's team opened their season with a win over Chaminade University as well as defeating Hawaii Pacific in the final game of their regular season-opening weekend on Saturday. 

Football - SFU Red Leafs football team won their first game of this season. They capped off their inaugural LoneStar Conference season in remarkable fashion on Saturday evening at SFU Stadium, blowing out the West Texas A&M Buffaloes 46-14. 

Volleyball - The SFU Red Leafs team closed out their regular season, earning a 3-1 road win over the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets on Saturday afternoon.

In this final President’s Dream Colloquium, Letitia Pokiak and Spencer Greening speak to questions of ecological and cultural resilience confronted by their respective communities. This event focuses on the issues of climate change and resource extraction in northwestern British Columbia and the Canadian western Arctic, home to the Inuvialuit and Ts’msyen peoples and their strategies to address these twin crises.
