EQUITY COMPASS CONVERSATIONS

SFU’s Equity Office is currently developing an Equity Compass, a clear and concise summary of equity themes and priority areas that will guide efforts across the university in the years to come. Join Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, vice president, people, equity, and inclusion, and Samir Traoré, executive director, equity, diversity and inclusion, as they present the work to date and facilitate a discussion on the draft equity compass.

Next week you are invited to participate and attend one of these sessions.

BALANCING CHILDREN'S CONCUSSION RECOVERY AND SCREEN TIME

A study published in the journal Pediatrics, led by Molly Cairncross and researchers at the University of Calgary looked for links between the self-reported screen time of more than 700 children aged 8-16. In the first 7-10 days following an injury, symptoms were reported by them and their caregivers over the following six months.

 

#MADEBYSFU RETURNS TO SFU SURREY

This year’s annual marketplace returned on October 13, attracting hundreds of shoppers and showcasing diverse wares, such as gourmet cookies, unique walking sticks, herbal salves and more.

 

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES MEDIATED THE ROLE OF SEA OTTERS

Anne Salomon is a leading marine ecologist and professor at SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management. Her research on sea otters points to the value of using traditional Indigenous knowledge to inform how coastal ecosystems are managed today.

 

SFU is sending a delegation of faculty, staff and students to COP 27 this November. It’s an important opportunity to highlight SFU’s climate leadership, build international connections and the delegation will bring back their learnings to share with our communities.

ACTIVE BYSTANDER INTERVENTION

SFU’s Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office is hosting the annual #ItTakesAllOfUsSFU campaign from October 24-28. Learn how you can prevent sexual violence by practicing the 4Ds of active bystander intervention. Ever wonder how to report something suspicious, how to spot it and what it actually is? IT Services shares a few simple steps to protect your personal information online.

Learn about this year’s theme, Open for Climate Justice, with workshops, activities and displays, October 24-30.

Tools for Well-Being in the Classroom offers instructors and TAs/TMs quick, practical strategies to support students and exchange ideas. Register by October 24 and also gain access to a toolkit of strategies and templates.

Every year, SFU recognizes staff members for their outstanding contributions to the university or their community. If one of your colleagues is deserving of recognition, nominate them today. Nomination closes on October 30.

The survey is another way for you to provide input on upcoming budget priorities. Responses will help us understand how best to allocate resources in the upcoming fiscal year. The survey will be available until midnight on October 25.
