EQUITY COMPASS CONVERSATIONS

SFU’s Equity Office is currently developing an Equity Compass, a clear and concise summary of equity themes and priority areas that will guide efforts across the university in the years to come. Join Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, vice president, people, equity, and inclusion, and Samir Traoré, executive director, equity, diversity and inclusion, as they present the work to date and facilitate a discussion on the draft equity compass.

MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF HYBRID WORK

Researchers from SFU and Toronto Metropolitan University claim that workers with hybrid schedules reported higher mental health scores compared to workers who worked entirely from home or in person.

 

INTERPRETING EARTHQUAKE-INDUCED LANDSLIDES

Researchers in SFU Earth Sciences are continually monitoring earthquakes in B.C. to understand the magnitude of the impacts and potential hazards.

 

CELEBRATING STREETFEST! 2022

In September, more than 5,000 community members joined us in celebrating the start of fall at StreetFest! 2022. The event was organized by SFU, SFSS and UCA and featured local artisans, student performers and a variety of food trucks.

 

Barbara Mitchell, a professor in the gerontology department, has received funding for her research project, “The role of a culturally sensitive community-based health promotion program: Addressing resiliency and mental health for older Punjabi women in BC.” Overall, this funding will help her to develop and evaluate community-based programs, raise awareness on taboo topics and offer coping skills/resources to the Punjabi community.

PROVIDE INPUT ON SFU'S BUDGET PRIORITIES

The Faculty and Staff Budget Conversation Survey will be available until midnight on October 25. The survey is another way for you to provide input on upcoming budget priorities. Responses will help us understand how best to allocate resources in the upcoming fiscal year. The survey should only take a few minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous.

 

Q&A WITH MICHAEL RICHARDS

SFU's new associate vice-president, Michael Richards, aims to help strengthen the university's international reputation and support research with real-world impact. Richards is well-positioned in his role to ensure the SFU research community receives the support and services needed to develop and deliver research programs with meaningful impact across the communities SFU serve.

 

The Warren Gill Award for Community Impact recognizes a faculty or staff member who demonstrates a significant positive impact in the social, economic, environmental and/or cultural fabric of one or more of the communities SFU serves.

If you know someone you’d like recognized for lifetime achievement in community engagement, submit your nomination before December 9.

October 20 | Hosted by SFU Safety and Risk Services

Be prepared in the event of an earthquake on campus. Join us virtually or in person on October 20 at 10:20 a.m. for the annual ShakeOut BC earthquake drill. A live drill will be hosted on Burnaby Campus in the Diamond Family Auditorium (event starts at 10:00 AM and live drill at 10:20 a.m.). Learn how to build an emergency kit and test out the tools scientists use in their earthquake hazard monitoring research.

This symposium brings together practitioners of climate justice to share knowledge to help to advance climate justice. Join the session and learn about collaborative research and climate solutions that advance Indigenous sovereignty, storytelling for community resilience and engaging youth in climate justice research.

October 21 | Hosted by SFU’s Knowledge Mobilization Hub

Learn how to shine in media interviews at this workshop led by SFU international studies professor Megan Mackenzie. This workshop covers the "dos and don'ts" of media interviewing as a researcher and much more.

THE RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR AND MEDIA

October 26 | Hosted by SFU Public Square

A panel of international experts will discuss how media has shaped public opinion and narratives differently. From the spectacle of terror, nuclear blackmail, oil nationalism and outright apathy, this discussion will cover a range of topics from speakers in Ukraine, Canada, Europe and the US.
