HEALTH SCIENCES PROFESSOR TO LEAD NATIONAL GENDER AND HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Angela Kaida is a distinguished professor at SFU and a leader in global health epidemiology. In January, she will take on a new role as scientific director of the Institute of Gender and Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. During her four-year term, she will oversee the development and advancement of research and training initiatives that address gender and health research priorities in Canada.

Meet SFU Facilities' Respect, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee: a small but mighty team of five staff dedicated to identifying and improving opportunities for better access and inclusivity at Burnaby campus. TOP 22 OF 2022: SFU'S SCHOLARLY IMPACTS, INNOVATIONS AND IDEAS

This week we celebrate the outstanding work of the SFU research community and bring you a roundup of the top 22 SFU scholarly works this year—in both the traditional top-cited and Altmetric rating systems. Thank you, SFU researchers—we look forward to continuing the series in 2023.

 

In an unconventional experiential learning assignment developed by Chelsea Little for students in her Resource and Environmental Management class, students were tasked with revising Wikipedia articles on Canada's protected parks and wildlife management areas. This helped them build scientific communication and source evaluation skills while combating misinformation in the global community.

For many, the holidays are a time of gift-giving. Contributing some of your time to volunteer can have a lasting positive impact on many people’s lives. Startup founders from MeaningfulWork and Moment Energy—two Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship-associated startups—are joining forces this holiday season to make a difference.

PREPARING FOR WINTER BREAK

As we prepare for the scheduled winter closure between Dec. 25 and Jan. 2, here are some reminders and resources to stay safe, healthy and secure.

 

Student Services is looking for volunteers to help welcome new students to the SFU community. Please join them in wearing an Ask Me t-shirt and button from Jan. 4 - 6 to greet our new community members and answer questions. We also invite you to sign up for one or more 1-hour volunteer shift(s) between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Burnaby campus to answer questions and help students find their way around.

The Taking Action lecture series offers fresh ideas from anti-racism activists outside of our province. This January, join UK author, TED speaker, and equalities advocate Sophie Williams, who will lead a presentation about the fundamentals of active allyship in the workplace and daily life.
