Four ceremonies will be held over the two days and will include honorary degrees conferred upon Afua Cooper, Michelle Good, Rupert Raj and SFU chancellor emeritus Anne Giardini.

JUNE FRANCIS TO LEAD B.C.'S NEW ANTI-RACISM DATA COMMITTEE

This appointment signals another major stride in June Francis's efforts to advocate for anti-racism in British Columbia. A marketing professor in the Beedie School of Business, she is also a special advisor on anti-racism to SFU President Joy Johnson and focuses her work on making the province a more inclusive place for all.

SFU RESEARCHERS HELPING SAVE B.C. KELP FORESTS

Scientists at SFU are racing against the clock to save British Columbia’s disappearing kelp forests for future generations. Researchers warn that the loss of kelp forests due to warming temperatures can be sudden and catastrophic.

Led by biologist Sherryl Bisgrove and supported by the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the team has developed a cryogenic freezing technique to store germplasm, or “seed” of at-risk bull kelp in a biobank.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY IN GLOBAL SECURITY

The rapidly deteriorating global security architecture includes employing hybrid warfare tactics that range from cyberattacks to propaganda and subversion, economic blackmail, and sponsorship of proxy forces. With funding from the Department of National Defense, Elis Vllasi from SFU's Department of Political Science will bring 16 teams of students from across Canada to SFU to tackle these challenges. Their knowledge will be tested, they will present pioneering policy ideas, and the results of the challenge to a panel of expert judges from across the national security and defence sector, academia, industry, and government.
