LEARN WHAT'S NEXT FOR SFU

After a robust consultation period and thousands of engagements, we’re excited to share a draft of the SFU: What’s Next? strategic plan at our virtual faculty and staff town halls, hosted by SFU President Joy Johnson and Provost and Vice-President Academic pro tem Wade Parkhouse. 

Participants will receive a draft of the plan in advance and have the chance to share their thoughts with senior leadership, alongside hearing how the plan will guide decision-making at all levels of the university.

From May to October, the SFU: What's Next? team continued hosting community conversations across the university community. Read the key themes and findings from dozens of round table conversations and input from more than 1,000 students in the latest reports.

FACULTY OF SCIENCE WELCOMES ANGELA BROOKS-WILSON

As of October 31, 2022, Angela Brooks-Wilson is SFU's new Dean of Science. Brooks-Wilson comes to her role as dean with a wealth of experience as a researcher, creative mentor and dedicated problem solver. She has recently served as SFU's associate vice president, research pro tem.

 

SFU PHYSICIST ONE OF SIX IN CANADA TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP

SFU physics professor Stephanie Simmons has been recognized with a prestigious Arthur B. McDonald Fellowship, one of only six awarded nationally. The $250,000 fellowship is given by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council to early-stage academic researchers who focus on the natural sciences and engineering, to support their research as they become leaders in their fields.

 

PEOPLE OF SFU: FOOD SUPERSTARS BRING DINING COMMONS TO LIFE

After years in development, SFU's new state-of-the-art facility opened its doors on September 3, 2022.

This mouth-watering projectwhich includes the addition of more than 500 seats and 10 new dining stationscame together with the leadership and dedication of Simon Tse and Dan Traviss, who brought great campus food experiences to the Burnaby campus.

 

SFU health sciences researcher Julia Smith recently published a study that highlights the challenges women healthcare providers experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing insights into ongoing professional burnout.

The unpredictable weather makes campus commutes challenging, especially on Burnaby Mountain. Winterfest 2022 is a chance for the SFU community to learn from safety experts, visit with vendors specializing in winter gear and understand how SFU communicates the status of campus conditions. Stop by Convocation Mall on November 2 anytime between 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

FEATURE EVENT

TSĒMĀ IGHARAS: HUGHADĒSŁĒŁ — GIVE IT ALL AWAY

November 1 - January 13 | Hosted by SFU Galleries

In this exhibition, organized with SFU Galleries and Tanya Lukin Linklater, award-winning artist Tsēmā Igharas undertakes a series of approaches in art-making and display that invite the participation of the viewer. Her preparation for this project ranged from harvesting and processing berries, teas and salmon in her home Tāłtān territory to the development of sculpture with materials connected to mine sites. Visit the exhibit any day between November 1 - January 13.

Education and public policy expert Philip Oreopoulos will give a BMO Public Lecture on the powerful role that advisors can play in helping children learn and succeed in education and the labour market.
