MAYA PIDDOCKE EARNS THE 2021 STAFF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR WORK PERFORMANCE

Maya Piddocke’s role as manager of laboratory operations in SFU’s Department of Biological Sciences is a complex balancing act, one she manages with a positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders. Her efforts have earned her a 2021 Staff Achievement Award for work performance.

 

SFU ONLINE LAB COURSE PROVOKES INNOVATIVE TEACHING TECHNIQUES

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, instructors worldwide faced the challenge of translating their course materials to online learning. It was particularly difficult for courses that require a lab component as a part of their curriculum. Find out how SFU School of Sustainable Energy Engineering lecturer Mahda Jahromi integrated a virtual platform that was used for the first time in Canada and the benefits to students.

 

Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Ph.D. candidate Josh Alampi is the lead author of a peer-reviewed publication that won the 2022 International Society for Environmental Epidemiology's Best Environmental Epidemiology Paper award. Co-authors for the award-winning paper include FHS professors Lawrence McCandless and Bruce Lanphear, and professor emeritus Tim Takaro.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION WEEK

Sept. 26 – 30 marks Truth And Reconciliation week at SFU. Wear orange to honour those impacted by Canada’s residential school system.

Show your support by participating in initiatives happening at SFU and in your local community and deepen your understanding about this history to advance reconciliation.

In recognition of the Province’s approach last year to honour the importance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, SFU will be observing September 30 as a statutory day.

In the spirit of reconciliation and guided by practical concerns, the non-Indigenous world now looks to traditional ecological knowledge with new interest. We recognize that such knowledge is relevant to understanding humanity’s past and to navigate our present and future relationships with the Earth. The President's Dream Colloquium welcomes award-winning activist Kim Recalma-Clutesi and cultural anthropologies Douglas Deur to SFU Harbour Centre for the first in the 2022 lecture series. 

 

NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

September 30 | Hosted by SFU Surrey Campus Administration

You are invited to join SFU President Joy Johnson and Executive Director of SFU Surrey Steve Dooley, in partnership with the Surrey Urban Indigenous Leadership Committee, the City of Surrey and Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association, for an afternoon of reflection, stories, tea/coffee, bannock, poetry and drumming.
