NINE SFU RESEARCHERS AWARDED AS NEW AND RENEWED CANADA RESEARCH CHAIRS

From Indigenous community-based archaeology to quantum computing, SFU’s leading Canadian scholars are making cutting-edge discoveries and challenging conventions to help build a better future for generations to come.

INVESTING IN STUDENTS AND OUR FUTURE

Scholarships, bursaries and awards provide critical financial support to students who may not otherwise be able to pursue an SFU education. This past year alone, 2,900 scholarships, awards and bursaries went towards supporting students thanks to the generosity of SFU’s incredible donors, which includes the creation of 17 new annual awards.

GETTING READY FOR WORLD CUP

SFU alumnus Jaime Tatsubana, along with the support of SFU's Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship Mentor Meet program, created a website for football statistics FootyStats.org. He entered into the market before anyone else and seized that opportunity prior to the 2018 World Cup. FootyStats aims to expand beyond football (soccer) and into basketball, hockey, tennis and even cricket.

BUILDING BETTER DEMOCRACIES THROUGH JOURNALISM

As children of immigrant parents who share a belief in building stronger communities through service and philanthropy, SFU donors Dave Sukhdip Singh Hayer and Marie Isabelle Martinez Hayer made a generous gift to support SFU students studying journalism.

This fall, the SFU bargaining team tabled proposals that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to ensuring research assistants are transitioned to SFU employees with as few exceptions as possible. Determining a first collective agreement is complex, but SFU is committed to protecting the rights of graduate students to pursue knowledge without barrier and ensuring their contributions to the SFU research ecosystem are recognized.

November 21 | Hosted by SFU Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

In October's Equity Compass conversation sessions, the SFU community's shared commitment to elevating and co-creating a stronger future was very much present. However, we recognize that this time of year is difficult for faculty and staff and many were not able to attend.

To ensure we are capturing feedback across our community, we are hosting another session with Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, vice president, people, equity, and inclusion, and Samir Traoré, executive director, equity, diversity and inclusion. Join us to hear about the work to date and participate in a discussion on the draft equity compass.
