PREMIER REVEALS FIRST DETAILS OF SFU MEDICAL SCHOOL

SFU is forging ahead with planning for the first medical school to be built in Western Canada in the last half century. The Premier of British Columbia, David Eby, announced $4.9 million in start-up funding for the medical school on Monday and shared some of the first details about the school, aiming to accept its first students by September 2026.

 

NEW LAB TO IGNITE WILDFIRE RESEARCH

Sophie Wilkinson, a wildfire and ecosystem scientist, is joining SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management next year to kickstart the Fire and Ecosystems Research Lab.

She will work to understand the drivers of high severity fires, the impacts wildfire can have on different ecosystems and how we can better manage wildfire to protect ecosystems and communities.

 

SFU BOARD CHAIR NAMED ONE OF B.C.'S TOP BUSINESS LEADERS

Angie Lamarsh, SFU alumnus and chair of SFU’s Board of Governors, has been recognized by Business in Vancouver with the top Forty under 40 award.

Under her leadership, HSBC has developed the largest sustainable finance suite in Canada and is focused on ensuring businesses of all sizes are able to access capital to transition to a low-carbon economy.

 

Kate Hosford was one of 18 PhD students named as a 2022 Health System Impact Fellow by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. 

She hopes that empowering organizations with evidence-based data will allow organizations within the seniors’ services sector to advocate for and deliver effective programming for older adults across BC.

WINTER WEATHER AHEAD

Each year, SFU reports back to the community about the operationalization of the University’s Sexual Violence and Misconduct Prevention, Education and Support policy (GP 44). The annual report includes a summary of key educational initiatives, support and response services provided to the SFU community.

 

WHO ARE THE NEXT SFU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAMERS?

SFU Athletics is accepting nominations for the SFU Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023. It recognizes and honours the memory of those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to SFU Athletics and brought excellence to the university and its intercollegiate athletic programs. Nominations will be accepted until Jan.15, 2023.

 

For Budget Conversations 23/24, SFU engaged with students, faculty and staff to understand their top priorities for the upcoming budget, as well as to inform future financial planning. This year, leadership connected with our community across different platforms to foster more participation and conversation. This included surveys, and interactive and engaging online sessions (including a first-ever Instagram live). Learn more about what students, faculty and staff told us and where we are in the 2023/24 budget process.

BURNABY MAINTENANCE UPDATE

On Saturday, Dec. 3, from 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Shrum C will be closed to the community due to necessary maintenance work on the ventilation system. SFU'S UNITED WAY BOOK AND SAMOSA SALE

November 30 | Hosted by SFU's United Way Campaign

SFU Surrey is hosting this fundraising event in support of the United Way of the Lower Mainland. The event returns to campus tomorrow, Nov. 30, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Mezzanine. This is a great opportunity to purchase some books and delicious food with all funds going to programs and services that help children, families and seniors in our communities. They are looking for a few people to help out between 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. If you can help, please sign up here.

 

December 6 | Hosted by Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office

This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the murder of 14 women at the l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. On Dec. 6, the SFU community is invited to attend an in-person memorial hosted by the SFU Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office and other campus partners to remember and honour the victims of this tragedy.
