EMPOWERING BLACK WOMEN TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

Communications alumnus Itse Hesse created Black Girl Collective (BGC), a registered nonprofit based in Burnaby that provides safe, inclusive and accessible spaces for Black women. The group advocates for the joy and visibility of Black women with the goal of uniting, empowering and inspiring each other through custom-made programs.

 

CREATING INNOVATIVE, IMAGINATIVE AND INVITING SPACES AT SFU

Known for his professionalism and collaborative attitude, Staff Achievement Award recipient Augustin Tretinik garners praise from everyone he works with. As the facilities services project manager for SFU’s Vancouver campus, Tretinik has been integral to the transformation of that campus. SIAT RESEARCHER NAMED DIGITAL HEALTH CEO OF THE YEAR

SIAT associate professor Sylvain Moreno has won this award for his service as CEO and scientific director of the Digital Health Circle. Moreno’s research focuses on neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to change and adapt—and its implications for cognitive health. He hopes to continue contributing to the creation and development of innovative health solutions.

 

WHY DO VIOLENT CRIMES ESCALATE?

Fans of scary movies may think they can predict fatal outcomes—but real life is much different. SFU criminologist Eric Beauregard has extensive experience interviewing violent offenders. His recent research looked into why some violent crimes turn lethal and others do not. The goal is to help law enforcement and policymakers better understand and prevent fatal crimes.

USING NEW TOOLS TO FIND OLD IMAGES

SFU Archives holds more than 300,000 photographic images and people frequently ask the staff if they have a picture of Terry Fox, a building opening or a charter student from SFU's early days. Luckily it's easier than looking for a needle in a haystack with the aid of new tools that make these photographs accessible online.

 

PROTECTING YOUR ONLINE IDENTITY

Learn how to keep your information secure via free Information Security Essentials modules provided by IT Services. This training gives SFU staff and faculty the tools they need to reduce the risk of fraud or scams; it’s a modern-day life skill to keep your personal information safe. The modules are intended to be fun, interactive and a quick way for the learner to engage with the material.

 

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: HONORARY DEGREES 2023

The Senate Committee on University Honours invites members of the community to nominate deserving people for an honorary degree. The highest honour conferred by the university, honorary degrees are awarded to distinguished individuals in recognition of their achievements or for their exceptional contributions to the public good. Deadline to submit is September 19, 2022.
