IT SERVICES APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Please welcome Brian Stewart in the role of Chief Information Officer and Jastej Singh Aujla as the new Chief Information Security Officer.

Brian brings 20+ years of managerial experience in the post-secondary and commercial sectors. He will be joining SFU from his role as Deputy Chief Information Officer at the University of Alberta.

Jastej brings over 20 years’ experience in cyber security, risk management and compliance along with enterprise strategy development and execution. Before joining SFU, Jastej was the Director of IT Security, Risk, Compliance, & Resiliency at TransLink.

We look forward to continuing to improve the digital experience for our faculty, staff, researchers and students with these new appointments. Thank you Keith Fong and Michael Thorson for keeping IT Services moving forward and stepping up to provide strong leadership during the transition period.

 

BODY CAMERAS AND LIVE STREAMING AID SEARCH AND RESCUE 

RescueCASTR, developed at the SFU School of Interactive Arts and Technology, equips wilderness search and rescue teams with body cameras so they can stay better connected with search coordinators. RescueCASTR is designed to give the team more implicit awareness of events and conditions in the field, leading to better decision making.

 

HAVING FUN WITH NUMBERS

"I believe that my passion for science came almost purely through the fun time I had with my father at an early age and my learning experiences in school. When I was a little kid, my father introduced mathematics to me by solving fun puzzles with me."

Wei (Becky) Lin is a lecturer of Statistics and Actuarial Science and shares her work and thoughts on making the field of science more welcoming

and inclusive.

 

SFU COMPUTING SCIENCE PROFESSOR RECEIVES CANADIAN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Computer science professor emeritus, Stella Atkins, has received the prestigious CS-Can|Info-Can Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding and sustained contributions in research, teaching and service as a computer scientist. Throughout her 25-year career at SFU, she performed pathfinding research in medical image display and analysis.

 

Psychology professor Allen Thornton and other researchers have found that socially and economically vulnerable persons suffer from disproportionately high rates of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Learn more about their urgent recommendations.

Weaving memoir with microbiology, SFU professor Lynne Quarmby transports us to the warming Arctic to rediscover the heart of human existence amidst the stark realities of climate change.

KEEP YOURSELF AND WILDLIFE SAFE ON CAMPUS

Safety and Risk Services is committed to educating our community members about wildlife safety. Our Campus Public Safety team continues to see and hear about unsafe encounters with local wildlife: feeding, selfies and drivers pulling over unsafely to view animals at the side of the road. It's all of our responsibility to know best practices when it comes to learning, working and living among wildlife on the Burnaby Mountain.

IT'S A MATCH! ONLINE DATING APP STUDY

The SFU Biology's Crespi Lab is doing an online questionnaire study on psychological traits, social media and dating app usage. Participation is reimbursed with $15 e-gift card. Contact nancy_yang_2@sfu.ca for more info. You do not need to use or have used social media or dating apps to participate. This study is currently open to males only as the quota for female participants has been filled.

Go By Bike Week is back at all three of our campuses. Don't forget to register and track the kilometres you cycle and see how many greenhouse gas emissions you save. Join us at celebration stations in Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver for free snacks and tune-ups during the event week.
