MULTIFAITH CENTRES NOW ACCESSIBLE AT SFU'S SURREY CAMPUS

These Multifaith spaces create appropriate, permanent places for various groups to pray, celebrate mass, study sacred texts and connect to their faith and community.

“It’s our number one priority to ensure that all students feel welcome and safe on our campus, and we support all forms of religious expression,” says Steve Dooley, executive director of the Surrey campus.

 

SFU criminologist Martin Andresen researches the geographical and social factors associated with crime. His study on Vancouver, B.C. crime during the COVID-19 lockdown revealed some predictable trends amid the sudden social experiment of the pandemic.  

Environmental science student Jorrin Lenton and assistant professor Brendan Murphy have been collecting data to evaluate the impact of wildfires on soil. For Lenton, this research project is a pathway towards extinguishing the disastrous impact of wildfires in his community.

SFU researcher Stephanie Simmons co-led this important milestone at the Silicon Quantum Technology Lab in SFU’s physics department. They have unlocked immediate opportunities to construct massively scalable quantum computers and the quantum internet that will connect them.

NEW DEAN APPOINTED FOR FACULTY OF SCIENCE

We are excited to share that Angela Brooks-Wilson will begin her term as dean on October 31. Her experience as a creative mentor, dedicated problem solver and most recently her time as SFU's associate vice-president, research, pro tem make her an ideal fit for the dean’s office.

 

GLOBAL PROGRAM CODE ESTABLISHED FOR EDI SERVICE SPENDING

A new program code for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Service Providers is now available for use. Please use program code 90250 to record all spending on EDI consultants, educators and others hired to deliver EDI services. This new code will help the equity office better understand the needs of the institution as SFU continues to foster a campus environment where all feel welcome, safe, accepted and valued in learning, teaching, research and work. The new SFU Copyright Clearance Fund covers copyright costs for certain eligible course readings and provides free, online access for students, expanding options for instructors to include copyright-protected materials in the classroom with no cost to students.

THE UNIVERSITY IMPACT FORUM: SUSTAINABLE CITIES

September 14-15 | Hosted by SFU

The Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Forum: Sustainable Cities, presented in partnership with SFU, will explore the aspects of climate change, both as a driver of risk and as a critical opportunity to restructure and reorientate towards sustainability. This inspiring and engaging virtual event is free for SFU students, faculty and staff.
