SFU PROFESSORS CHAMPION EMERGING INDIGENOUS WRITERS

SFU English professors Deanna Reder and Sophie McCall have co-chaired the Indigenous Voices Awards since 2017, providing Indigenous writers in Canada with monetary support and mentorship opportunities. In that time, they've witnessed many writers find new success and the growth of a flourishing network of contemporary Indigenous authors.

The Water We Call Home is an invitation to envision a future where Indigenous identity is structured through water and family rather than colonial law. This series of films created by Jessica Hallenbeck, Rosemary Georgeson and Kate Hennessy will be presented at Galiano Island’s Yellowhouse Art Centre with an opening reception for the general public on July 23.

After disastrous flooding in the fall and winter of 2021, SFU Ancillary Services helped collect more than $26,000 in donations for affected communities. SFU student Daphne Chan recently won an essay competition focused on how the unit provided leadership on this community outreach initiative.
