PIPIN' HOT COMPETITION

After a two-year hiatus, the SFU Pipe Band is tuned up and back in Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships, August 12-13. The 46-member elite band is aiming for its seventh win and is one of only four bands from outside Scotland to claim a championship.

 

TSLEIL-WAUTUTH AND SFU USE TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN OCEAN RESEARCH AND RESTORATION

Before colonization, the coastal waters of Burrard Inlet were an abundant source of food. SFU marine ecology and ecotoxicology professor Leah Bendell and graduate student Bridget Doyle partnered with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation to study if the addition of shell hash would help restore traditional food sources in the inlet. 

 

SFU GRADUATE STUDENT NETS FIRST PLACE IN GLOBAL COMPETITION

Department of biological sciences master's student Ranah Chavoshi won an Ocean Wise Innovator Lab competition. Ranah's seaweed-bioplastic prototype uses seaweed’s properties to create a biodegradable film to replace plastic. Learn how her project can reduce climate change and ocean plastics.

LISTEN TO THE COMPLETE TRIP DIARY PODCAST

At the end of last month, The Trip Diary, the special Below the Radar miniseries, pulled into its terminus station with its final episode, “B-Line to the Future.” 

In this series, Urban Studies alum and host Steve Tornes speaks to transportation enthusiasts and policymakers about the social and political factors that impact transportation policy. Join a ride exploring urban design in a variety of commute modes – walking, cycling, transiting, driving – while drawing from data and lived experiences related to moving through urban spaces on these lands, and beyond.

There's an amazing show in the sky this week, don't forget to look up and check it out. With a peak of 50 to 100 meteors per hour, join Joanna Woo and Matthew Cimone at the Trottier Observatory telescope to visualize deep space objects and learn about our place in the universe.
