STAYING HEALTHY AND WELL THIS FALL

We look forward to welcoming new and returning students, faculty and staff in-person for the Fall 2022 term!

As we navigate the impacts of communicable diseases circulating in the province, SFU remains committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all who teach, learn, research, work and visit our campuses. SFU follows public health guidance and has many layers of protection in place across our three campuses, including:

  • Masks Masks are encouraged on our campuses, particularly in spaces where people are in close proximity. Masks are not required and are a matter of personal choice.
  • Vaccines – Vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself and others in your community. SFU encourages you to get your COVID-19 booster dose as soon as you are eligible.
  • Daily Health Assessments - Conduct a daily health assessment before coming to campus. If you’re sick, stay home and follow public health guidelines including What to do if you have COVID-19.
  • COVID-19 Rapid Tests – Free rapid test kits are available for all faculty, staff and students at all three campuses.
  • Ventilation – SFU continues to audit spaces for air quality, upgrade filters and implement WorkSafeBC and ASHRAE standards.
  • Enhanced Cleaning Protocols – Increased frequency of cleaning in high touch locations.

Thank you for your support, compassion and care as we work together to keep our community healthy and well.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

SUPPORT STUDENT WELL-BEING IN THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Tools for Well-Being in the Classroom is part of SFU’s Healthy Campus Community initiative. It offers quick, practical strategies to support student well-being and opportunities to exchange ideas with others. Instructors and TAs/TMs are invited to sign up and gain access to a toolkit of strategies and templates and be part of a community of care.

SFU Library recently upgraded Summit, SFU’s research repository, to a new platform! Improvements include options to embed media, a better search experience and new features to filter, sort and browse.

We’re excited to see more people back on campus this September, however, please be aware of traffic congestion and delays that may impact you.

West Parkade access from University Drive West has been closed over the summer to support work on Phase 2 student residences at SFU Burnaby.

As of September 3, 2022, the main entrance to the West Parkade off University Drive West will be reopened to one lane of inbound traffic only, with access available from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. The West Parkade entrance/exit off Gaglardi Way will be open 24/7, accessible southbound only from University Drive West and University Drive East.

One lane will remain closed during this time to accommodate a crane needed to complete the Phase 2 residences and work is expected to continue into October.

Buses at the Transportation Centre will return to their regularly scheduled routes with established pick-up and drop-off locations, but may also be impacted by traffic congestion.

Regardless of how you travel to and from campus, please give yourself extra time to accommodate for possible traffic delays and congestion. Thank you in advance for your patience as we continue to create more housing for our students.

UPCOMING SAFETY SYSTEMS TESTING IN EDUCATION BUILDING

There will be important safety systems testing on Wednesday, August 31, between 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. These tests are the final routine steps to the completion of EDB's renovation. There will be periods of disruptive noise and there will be a power outage as part of the testing (with backup generators being turned on).
