TWO INCOMING STUDENTS SET TO LAUNCH THEIR ACADEMIC JOURNEY WITH $180,000 AWARDS

Evan Dyce and Maya Rink, two of SFU's newest undergraduate students, are recipients of the Schulich Leader Scholarship, one of Canada’s largest and most prestigious awards for high school graduates pursuing a university education in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

 

SFU LIVING LABS: WHERE RESEARCH MEETS CAMPUS SERVICES AND SUSTAINABILITY

Researchers have been collaborating with our on-campus service departments through the Living Labs program to find sustainable solutions for operational challenges we face across our three campuses. Current research topics include vehicle fleet electrification, implementation of reusables over bioplastics and the impact of commuting on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

 

MATH AS A WINDOW INTO THE NATURAL WORLD

SFU professor Ailene MacPherson uses mathematical models to ask questions about evolution, ecology, and epidemiology. She proposes a single framework for these models that can serve as guide for scientists, whether studying ancient DNA or the novel coronavirus. The Civic Innovation Lab is a partnership between the City of Burnaby and SFU, with the aim of finding innovative and practical solutions to urban issues that the city faces. The Stakeholders’ Walkability/Wheelability Audit in Neighbourhoods (SWAN) project, led by Atiya Mahmood from the Department of Gerontology will be integral to cultivating inclusive barrier-free communities.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESOURCE

The TA Hub is a virtual resource created to help strengthen teaching, leadership and interpersonal skills. It combines online and in-person modules to help prepare all SFU TAs for their important roles supporting undergraduate students. This was created by the Centre for Educational Excellence and People Strategies with support from the Student Experience Initiative.

 

WEEKEND POWER OUTAGE - TRANSPORTATION CENTRE AND AREA

This weekend there will be a scheduled power outage affecting Convocation Mall, Central Parkade and portions of Transportation Centre from Friday, August 26, 8 p.m. to Monday, August 29, 7 a.m. Temporary lighting will be supplied to affected areas and Central Parkade will be closed during this work. Access to nearby buildings will remain open.

ACADEMIC WELL-BEING OF RACIALIZED STUDENTS: BOOK LAUNCH

August 30 | Hosted by SFU Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

You are invited to the book launch of Academic Well-Being of Racialized Students, edited by Benita Bunjun. There are 15 contributors in this collection, including alumni and students from Coast Salish, Okanagan and Mi'kmaq territories. Learn more about the book at the panel discussion with some of the contributors.
