DEAN ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES & FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Eugene Fiume’s term as dean in the Faculty of Applied Sciences has been renewed for another five years. Over his past term as dean, Fiume facilitated the creation of a new school, several professional graduate programs, a new building, the recruitment of 45 new faculty and more.

Laurel Weldon has been appointed to the position of dean in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, beginning January 1, 2023. Weldon is currently a professor in the department of Political Science. She is a member of the Royal Society of Canada as well as an SFU Distinguished Professor.

 

SFU RESEARCHERS CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE BIG BANG THEORY

SFU physicists are forging ahead and play an important role in the advancement of the ATLAS project—10 years after the Higgs Boson discovery by an international network of researchers that was announced in Switzerland. “The Higgs boson is central to the theory of how subatomic particles gain mass, and the universe would be a very different place without it,” says SFU Physicist Michel Vetterli.

 

COULD SEA ICE HELP PREDICT THE SURVIVAL OF ARCTIC HOODED SEALS?

Arctic temperatures have been warming three times faster than the global average. SFU environmental scientist Ruth Joy teams up with researchers from France to investigate the impacts of melting sea ice on ecology and food accessibility for Indigenous communities in the eastern Arctic.

 

These grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) will provide long-term operating funds to support research programs in a wide variety of natural sciences and engineering disciplines including climate change, chemistry, biology, mathematics and statistics, computer science and artificial intelligence.

Out on Campus (OOC) offers support and resources for the LGBTQIA2S+ community and its allies. Constantin Lozitsky, the programming assistant at OOC, is excited to welcome community members to the new SUB space.

The east and north entrances can be accessed from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. If faculty, staff or students require access outside of these hours, the Technology and Science Complex 1 entrance can be used. The full project will be completed later this summer.

Until September 2, road work and upgrades on University Drive East (UDE) will result in limited access to vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian traffic. Upgrades include the installation of street lights on UDE between Gaglardi Way and University High Street, widening of the multi-use path on UDE and repaving Nelson Way and UDE. In this episode, Am Johal and Genevieve LeBaron discuss her research work on forced labour and the global market forces which incentivize those practices. They also discuss the new role for public policy in solving real-world solutions, the unique context of the SFU School of Public Policy and its broader impact.
