UNIVERSITY NEWS

USING STÓ:LŌ KNOWLEDGE TO ADVANCE HIGHER EDUCATION

Stó:lō scholar and department chair Wenona Hall is opening a new chapter for SFU Indigenous Studies. Hall aims to launch a graduate program and introduce new undergraduate options. A triple alumnus of SFU, she has unique insights into the student experience. Hall previously led Stó:lō community-based research projects and educated students about decolonization processes and Indigenous resurgence at the University of the Fraser Valley.

 

TACKLING NEIGHBOURHOOD INEQUALITIES

SFU and South Vancouver Neighbourhood House formed a partnership examining resources and social infrastructure disparities in city planning. As a result of this collaborative work, a motion was presented to the City of Vancouver to address the ongoing inequities in South Vancouver and the Marpole neighbourhoods.

DECEMBER MEDICAL SCHOOL UPDATE

Developments from the past month include the introduction of a new acting associate dean for academics and the launch of the school's new website. Please share your thoughts by completing a brief monthly survey question.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: SPRING TA DAY 2024

Have knowledge that could make the life of a novice teaching assistant easier? Experienced TA's are invited to apply to lead in-person workshops at the spring orientation on January 12, 2024. Build your resume, gain presentation experience, receive compensation and help peers.

Uncover travel opportunities to Spain, Rome and Oxford via this interdisciplinary program, designed to explore and engage with values that shape culture. The only one of its kind in Canada, the program is both flexible and diverse. SFU employees can also enrol and utilize professional development funding options.

 

REMEMBERING AND HONOURING VICTIMS

December 6 | Hosted by Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the massacre of 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal. The SFU community is invited to attend an in-person memorial co-hosted by the SVSPO, SFU Women in Engineering and other campus partners and take action against gender-based violence. This event will be held at SFU's Burnaby campus.
