ADVANCING SFU'S GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS

President Joy Johnson led her first delegation to Africa to officially launch the Arusha Climate and Environmental Research Centre, a partnership between SFU and the Aga Khan University. The trip will also advance the university’s priorities and explore new opportunities for research, including the commitment to work with international partners on global challenges, like health and climate change.

 

WORLD'S MOST ADVANCED EXOSKELETON FOR THE MOBILITY CHALLENGED

XoMotion is a state-of-the-art robotic exoskeleton created during a decade of research and it is the product of an SFU spin off company, Human in Motion Robotics Inc. The device allows individuals with mobility disabilities to stand up and walk on their own without additional support. XoMotion maintains its stability and simultaneously encompasses all the ranges of motion and degrees of freedom needed for users to self-balance, walk, sidestep, climb stairs and crouch.

The previous version of the newsletter included an incorrect date. Please note the corrected dates below:



SFU will be closed from Monday, December 25, 2023 to Monday, January 1, 2024 (inclusive). All campuses will reopen on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Three discretionary paid days off are included (December 27 - 29) in addition to Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. This will provide faculty and staff with uninterrupted time off to enjoy the holidays with friends and family.

BURNABY CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

HOT WATER SERVICE INTERRUPTION

The Technology and Science Complex 1 will undergo scheduled maintenance on November 18 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cold water for drinking and washing will remain operational in sinks, showers, safety showers and eye wash stations. Hot water will resume by 7 a.m. on November 19.

Westbound traffic on University High Street will be detoured to University Crescent for the next two weeks. Southbound traffic on East Campus Road will be detoured to Highland Court. Buses going to and from Transit Loop will not be impacted. Please pay attention to signage in the area.

Marakame Ramiro Mejiaz will speak on the cultural significance of Wirikuta and the impact of Canadian Mining corporations' attempts to set up operations in traditional territories. Mejiaz is from the San Miguel Huaixtita community of the Wixarika Nation of Mexico. He is a community spiritual authority of the ceremonial centre of Black Eagle.
