TOWN HALL WELCOMES FACULTY AND STAFF BACK TO CAMPUS

Were you one of the 300 faculty and staff members at last week's town hall? Attendees learned more about progress being made towards What's Next: The SFU Strategy and upcoming projects for the new term. They also participated in a Q&A session with senior leadership about the most pressing issues in our community.

 

PRESIDENT'S FACULTY LECTURES RETURN WITH FOCUS ON RESEARCHERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Celebrate cutting-edge research and researchers that engage with communities and mobilize knowledge to make real-world impacts by attending the 2023/24 President's Faculty Lectures. This year's theme is Making a Difference for B.C. and the series kicks off on September 27. Woo Soo Kim, professor in the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering and the scientific director of the SFU-led B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation, will talk about how 3D printing can make agriculture more sustainable.

Hosted by President Joy Johnson, these free public lectures are co-organized by the President's Office in partnership with SFU Public Square. 

 

UNVEILING A BEACON OF CREATIVE EXPLORATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Gibson Art Museum construction is now underway. A small exhibition at the SFU Gallery at the Burnaby campus is happening September 19 - 30, with models, renderings and opportunities for visitors to share their ideas about the new space.

 

LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST: 2023 TERRY FOX GOLD MEDALIST

Criminology student Angelica Parente was nominated by her professors and peers for her academic excellence and countless volunteer hours spent giving back to her community. Parente, who lives with an arteriovenous malformation in her brain, shares her hopes for making a difference and her personal philosophy of seizing each day. SFU's Terry Fox Gold Medal is granted to a SFU student every year who has demonstrated courage in the face of adversity as well as dedication to society.

 

NATIONAL POSTDOCTORAL APPRECIATION WEEK

SFU’s postdoctoral fellows community is an essential part of research and academic success at the university. Read about some of the postdocs, their research interests and what they aim to achieve during their time here.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

Appointed by SFU as an independent special advisor, Bob Copeland, Senior Vice-President of McLaren Global Sport Solutions, has provided his findings in an in-depth report that explored options for a sustainable future of football at the university. Learn more about his work, including his extensive engagement with student-athletes, coaches and staff as well as football alumni and industry experts.

 

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD NOMINATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED

Faculty, staff and students are invited to submit nominations to SFU's most prestigious teaching award, the SFU Excellence in Teaching Award, by October 16. In addition, a specialized award will be given this year for early career faculty.

 

The search process for the founding dean of the SFU Medical School is underway. The Provost invites all members of the community to visit the search website for more information on the search committee, timeline and draft candidate profile. Your input is invited in the following ways:

  • At an open forum on Thursday, September 21, from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. The open forum will be recorded and available for viewing on the search website.
  • Through an online feedback survey: Open until September 25. The Provost's Office will advise when the survey link is available.
 

STUDENT-COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMPETITION

Know any students who want to make a difference in their communities? Up to $30,000 in awards is available to fund student-community partnership projects that result in meaningful impact. Please direct your students to the website or contact by email at community-engagement@sfu.ca to present to your class or student group. Deadline to submit ideas is Friday, November 24.

 

Does your role involve managing or working with data? Faculty and staff can now find comprehensive resources on Data Central, an SFU website that includes access to institutional data, a business glossary and data dictionary, data reports and proposed data governance models and structures.

ACADEMIC QUADRANGLE HOT WATER SERVICE INTERRUPTION

From September 19 (today) to September 28, a hot water service interruption is required in the AQ, Education Building and Strand Hall for the pipe work currently happening in the AQ Courtyard. Cold drinking water and water for washing will remain operational. Normal operations and hot water will resume by the morning of September 29. SFU Recreation presents REC FEST 2023 on September 21 from 12:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Want to learn more about SFU Recreation, try out the climbing wall or win incredible prizes? The event will include free recreational activities including fitness classes, games and challenges.

 

CATCH A REP THE LEAF T-SHIRT AT VOLLEYBALL GAME THURSDAY

September 21 | Hosted by SFU Athletics

SFU Red Leafs will play their volleyball home opener on Sept. 21 (7 p.m.) at West Gym. The game will feature a t-shirt toss into the crowd, Tokyo katsu-sand serving delicious Japanese style Katsu sando and a sports clubs showcase. Free admission for SFU & FIC students with valid SFU ID.

CLEAN ENERGY ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

September 26 | Hosted by SFU School of Sustainable Energy Engineering

The virtual webinar will focus on the future of clean energy technologies and it will feature a panel of internationally renowned experts in the field of energy harvesting materials. They will also explain how these materials can unlock the path to a more sustainable future.

 

September 26 | Hosted by Centre for Educational Excellence in partnership with Transforming Inquiry into Learning and Teaching

What is our responsibility for Truth and Reconciliation in our classrooms and courses as settler instructors? Hear SFU instructors share how they have responded to this pressing challenge in their courses and teaching. They will discuss intentional next steps you can take to decolonize your teaching, wherever you are on this journey.
