Q&A: BENEFITS OF OPEN SCIENCE FOR SFU ACADEMICS

Are you curious about SFU’s Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology’s (INN) work to develop an open science framework at the university?

Psychology professor and INN associate director Brianne Kent and INN senior program manager and informatics team lead Kelly Shen discuss how open science can lead to more research funding and will create greater accessibility of research for SFU academics. 

 

The Department of Indigenous Studies (INDG) continues to reduce barriers to education of Indigenous cultures through INDG-Online, a program that provides Indigenous curricula through remote delivery. So far, 11 courses are available via INDG-Online—from treaties in Canada to Indigenous ethnozoology.

 

SFU CHEMISTRY STUDENT WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD WITH INNOVATIVE TAKE ON PLASTICS

After placing first in Canada, chemistry PhD candidate Kate Fraser won third place in the 2022 Young Person's World Lecture Competition.

Her presentation, Plastics for Renewable Energy Devices, showed the untapped potential of highly conductive plastics in addressing the global energy crisis.

 

SFU TO HOST FIRST PHYLLIS WEB MEMORIAL READING AND AWARD

On November 11, 2021, Canada lost renowned poet and broadcaster Phyllis Webb. To honour her incredible work and legacy, the Poetry in Canada Society has established the annual Phyllis Webb Memorial Reading and Award. SFU's Department of English and Library is co-sponsoring this year’s event, which will celebrate the first recipient of the award, Cecily Nicholson.

ADDRESSING RACISM IS OUR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. From identifying racist behaviour to standing up to ignorance and hatred, we can all help to establish that racism has no place at SFU.

 

INDIGENOUS DINING PROGRAM LAUNCHES AT SFU DINING COMMONS

You're invited to the launch of the new Indigenous Dining Program at the Dining Commons on Friday, March 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Rooted is a new dining program, which is a collaboration between SFU, Feed BC and Chef Stephanie Baryluk, to feature dishes inspired by Indigenous culture.

Faculty and staff are invited to attend the town hall for the launch of What's Next: The SFU Strategy on Thursday, March 23. Hear from senior leaders across the university about the four key priorities that will shape SFU in the coming years, creating a crucial framework to guide individual and collective decision making, resource allocation and accountability.

All staff, faculty and students are invited to Wellness Days, happening online and in-person at the Vancouver campus from March 28 - 30. This free event aims to positively influence the health and well-being of the SFU community. Take part in a variety of therapeutic activities, such as art therapy, a wellness fair and dog therapy.
