FREE TUTORING PROGRAM USES INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR UNIVERSITY |
For Todd Nelson (BSc, Hons., 2022), SFU provided a conduit to learn about his values as an Indigenous person. In his final year as a behavioural neuroscience student, Nelson enrolled in an Indigenous Studies course for personal enrichment and it lead to the creation of the Indigenous Tutoring & Mentoring Program (ITMP).
Inspired by his learning, with the help of Indigenous Studies professor Kicya7 Joyce Schneider, Todd has introduced Indigenous cultural safety training for all of ITMP’s volunteers. Now enrolled in SFU’s Professional Development Program, Todd recently organized a field trip to SFU’s Burnaby campus for ITMP’s students.

FEMALE DUO RECEIVES TOP PRIZE AT CANADIAN ENGINEERING COMPETITION |
SFU Applied Science students Aru Bhola and Erin Flood outperformed 200 engineering students across Canada and were one of the few all-female teams.
In their first challenge, the team developed a conceptual design for a self-sufficient, off-the-grid tiny home that used minimal power, recycled water, passive heating and biodegradable insulation. In their second challenge, they designed an accessible playground for children who have Sanfilippo Syndrome — a rare genetic neurodegenerative disease.

HAVING A BLAST THIS SPRING WITH THE SFU ROCKETRY CLUB |
Last month a group of SFU students conducted their first liquid rocket engine test, in accordance with all safety protocols, at SFU's Burnaby campus. Liquid rocket engines are similar to the ones used by NASA and SpaceX rockets and now the SFU Rocketry Club members hope to use the momentum to create more complex rocket engines.
“We calculated that the engine generated 2,400 Newtons of force - roughly equal to the force it would take to lift a grizzly bear...” says Elias Bircher, a fifth-year engineering physics student and the former SFU Rocketry President.
