DANIELLE MURDOCH WINS 2022 EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD

SFU Criminology senior lecturer Danielle Murdoch is one of three educators to win this award in recognition of her educational leadership, commitment to excellence and extraordinary scholarly engagement in pedagogy.

Whether participating in professional development activities, conducting teaching and learning development grants or fostering relationships with educators that contribute to her growth as an instructor, Murdoch is always looking for ways to improve her practice.

 

UNEARTHING THE ANCIENT FOSSIL PLANT HISTORY OF BURNABY MOUNTAIN

New research led by SFU paleobotanist Rolf Mathewes provides clues about what plants existed in the Burnaby Mountain area 40 million years ago during the late Eocene, when the climate was much warmer than it is today. The results of their plant fossil analysis were recently published in the International Journal of Plant Sciences.

“These plant fossils tell us the climate was warm temperate to subtropical because of the presence of palms,” says Mathewes.

 

USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO INCREASE RESEARCH IMPACT

How can academics advance their field and mobilize knowledge to benefit society? SFU Beedie professor Ian McCarthy says academic openness is key to increasing impact and social media can help. 

 

FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES CELEBRATES PAST YEAR'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS

During a celebratory gathering at the Diamond Family Auditorium, faculty, staff and alumni from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) came together to reflect on a year of outstanding academic achievements, department highlights and public outreach.

New FASS Dean Laurel Weldon opened the event with warm words of welcome. The event reimagined the annual townhall meeting formerly known as FASSembly to focus on celebrating the past year’s accomplishments, starting with flash talks by new and newly-promoted faculty across a range of disciplines.

TSSU MEDIATION UPDATE

Simon Fraser University is committed to becoming a living wage employer, and the university has worked tirelessly to negotiate a new collective agreement that pays TSSU members a living wage. Despite SFU’s continued efforts, TSSU has withdrawn from mediation at the BC Labour Relations Board.

You're invited to the virtual screening of Coextinction, a documentary that takes audiences deep into the interconnected web of ecosystem collapse on the frontlines of the Pacific Northwest’s most pressing environmental threats.

After the mother orca Tahlequah carries her dead calf for 17 days, Indigenous leaders and scientists make a desperate attempt to save the last 73 Southern Resident orcas from extinction.

Following the virtual screening, there will be a panel and a Q&A discussion session.
