UNIVERSITY NEWS

SFU AND TSSU TO RESUME BARGAINING

During a recent meeting with the Labour Relations Board, SFU and TSSU agreed to return to the bargaining table for a period between April 24 and May 19, 2023. Through this period, TSSU will withdraw its strike vote and SFU will withdraw its application challenging the legitimacy of the strike vote. SFU's Labour Relations team is eager to resume bargaining and looks forward to continued negotiations with TSSU leadership.

 

PROFESSOR WOLFGANG STUERZLINGER INDUCTED TO PRESTIGIOUS VIRTUAL REALITY ACADEMY

Formed in 2022, the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (VGTC) Virtual Reality Academy highlights accomplishments of leaders in the field of virtual reality (VR) and recognizes significant contributions to research in that field.

Earlier this month, the prestigious academy inducted seven new members including SIAT professor Wolfgang Stuerzlinger at a ceremony hosted in Shanghai on March 28. The academy induction recognizes Stuerzlinger’s extensive research in and significant contributions to the field of virtual reality.

 

GOING THE EXTRA MILE: ARTS CENTRAL AWARDED FOR DEDICATION TO STUDENT EXPERIENCE AND WELL-BEING

Congratulations to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Arts Central team for receiving the 2022 SFU Staff Achievement - Student Service Award, which recognizes their outstanding ability to meet FASS students’ needs by going the “extra mile.”  

Accepting the award are Rosaline Baik, Toyosi Bamgboye, Bettina Cenerelli, Kaitlan Davis, Brian Fox, Meghan Grant, Elisa Herrell, Karonne Moszar, Tracey Sherwood, Wendy Szeto, Claudia Hart and Claire de Lisser.  

 

BUZZWORTHY RESEARCH ON BUMBLE BEE HABITATS

Biological sciences professor Leithen M’Gonigle and his research team studied postfire areas in British Columbia to better understand how forest fires affect bee populations. Their work provides insights into the study of pollinators in areas affected by climate change.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: INDIGENOUS VISUAL EXPRESSIONS

SFU has started construction on the First Peoples’ Gathering House on Burnaby campus, located east of the Trottier Observatory. 

To create a sense of excitement for this project and honour the knowledge, teachings and practices of Indigenous peoples, the university is looking to incorporate visual expressions based on the theme of Walking in Two Worlds. 

The invitation for visual expressions is open to creations or collaborations by all self-identified Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) prospective students, current students and alumni. Selected submissions will be awarded a stipend.

 

'RECYCLOPEDIA' LAUNCHES AS RECYCLING INFO HUB AT SFU

Have you ever wondered how to sustainably dispose of your old electronics, coffee cups, pens and more at SFU?

The newly launched SFU Recyclopedia website can help you sort out how and where to recycle your used items sustainably on (and off) our campuses. 

 

The search for SFU’s next vice-provost and associate vice-president, academic (AVPA) has been reactivated and the call for applications is open until April 26, 2023.

ATTEND A SPECIAL FIRST PEOPLES' GATHERING HOUSE ANNOUNCEMENT

April 22 | Hosted by SFU

On April 22, the university community is invited to join a special announcement with the Government of British Columbia and the City of Burnaby to celebrate new funding support for the First Peoples’ Gathering House.

The First Peoples’ Gathering House, located on our Burnaby campus, is designed as a shared gathering space to celebrate Indigenous knowledge and culture. Construction is now underway with completion slated for 2024.

 

HELP SHAPE THE MEDICAL SCHOOL

There are various ways to be involved in the creation of SFU's medical school.  

April 25, 2023: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. An in-person information session for students, faculty and staff at the Surrey campus. Join hosts Kris Magnusson, Chair, Workforce Working Group for the SFU Medical School and senior advisor to the Provost; Steve Dooley, executive director of SFU’s Surrey campus and Roger Strasser, interim dean, SFU Medical School for a high-level discussion about space, infrastructure and community integration. Register.

You can also participate by completing a survey, which is open to all SFU students, faculty and staff.

People, not organizations, speak languages. This webinar introduces language-sensitive research in the International Baccalaureate and explains why and how it emerged. It provides an overview of the current state of knowledge and discusses potential avenues for future (interdisciplinary) research.
